The following terms and conditions apply to players who choose to use the FINAL FANTASY® XIV (the “game”) free trial (“Free Trial”).
These Free Trial terms are incorporated into the FINAL FANTASY® XIV User Agreement, located here (https://sqex.to/ffxiv_ua_na). By participating in the Free Trial, users agree to be bound by the FINAL FANTASY® XIV User Agreement, the Square Enix Privacy Policy, and all other applicable Square Enix and FINAL FANTASY® XIV policies and terms of service.
The following terms and conditions apply to players who use the Free Trial (“Free Trial Players”):
- Free Trial Players are not required to purchase licensed software to use the Free Trial.
- One (1) Free Trial account may be registered to a Square Enix account so long as that Square Enix account has not been previously registered with any version of the game.
- Free Trial Players can purchase select in-game items from the FINAL FANTASY® XIV Online Store during the Free Trial. Not all in-game items are available for purchase by Free Trial Players (e.g., in-game item gift codes).
- Free Trial Players can create up to eight (8) playable characters, restricted to one (1) playable character per World.
- Free Trial account characters have all their levels capped at level sixty (60).
- Free Trial account characters can possess a maximum of 300,000 gil (in-game currency).
- Free Trial Players cannot use the 'shout,' 'yell,' or 'tell' in-game chat options during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot access the in-game market board during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot trade with other players during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot send in-game letters using the moogle delivery service during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot hire retainers during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players can join a Linkshell or Cross-World Linkshell if invited but cannot create a new Linkshell or Cross-World Linkshell during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot create or join a Free Company during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players can join a party if invited or by using the Duty Finder but cannot assemble a party during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot create or join a PvP team or participate in The Feast (Ranked Match) or The Feast (Team Ranked Match) during the Free Trial.
- Free Trial Players cannot log into the Lodestone, the official forum, or Companion application during the Free Trial.
Square Enix reserves the right to make amendments to the Free Trial and these Free Trial terms, or to add or remove limitations on Free Trial Players, with or without notice in its sole discretion at any time.

Final Fantasy 14 had a rough start, especially on Mac. The base game was flawed in so many ways, even Square Enix worried it could be “the end of Final Fantasy”.
And to make matters worse, FFXIV’s Mac performance was so poor at launch, Square Enix officially apologized, suspended sales, and offered refunds:
After careful consideration, due to the issues surrounding the Mac version, we have decided to offer a full refund to those who wish to receive one.
But Square Enix made good on its promise to improve the game. Mac Performance continues to improve with every update, just as the game itself went from abysmal at launch in 2010, to critically-acclaimed with the release of Shadowbringers, the game’s latest expansion.
There has never been a better time to get started with FFXVI! The game’s latest patch vastly upgraded the free trial, trimmed the main campaign, and made the overall experience better for newcomers! Details below.
Final Fantasy 14 is becoming so good, it has easily earned a spot among the finest MMORPGs available for Mac.
Final Fantasy 14 on Mac: Shadowbringers and an upgraded free trial
On August 11, 2020, the game’s free trial was significantly upgraded.
Heavensward now included in the free trial
FFXIV’s free trial now includes the base game and the Heavensward expansion, which many consider the best-written story in the game. The free trial now allows players to reach level 60 (previously, free trial players could only go to level 35) and gives players access to as many jobs as they want.
Some limitations remain of course, such as having no access to the marketboard, as well as some other social features. Still, there has never been a better time to start playing Final Fantasy 14.
Shadowbringers: The latest and most ambitious expansion
Shadowbringers, released on July 2, 2019, is the culmination of years of hard work. After FFXIV’s extremely poor reception in 2010, the game had to be relaunched with a new team. A Realm Reborn was FFXIV’s fresh new start, and with every new Expansion, the game has continued to improve.
And with an outstanding 91 Metascore, Shadowbringers appears to be FFXIV’s best expansion yet:
As is standard for any MMO expansion, Shadowbringers comes with a new campaign, new areas to explore, new races (two), a level cap increase, and more.
But above all, Shadowbringers delivers an epic experience, featuring an excellent story, interesting characters, new systems, and a stellar soundtrack.
Some are even calling it “the greatest Final Fantasy games ever made”.
If you ever wanted to experience a Final Fantasy game on Mac, or simply were looking for a new MMO to play, you can’t go wrong with FFXIV.

Worried about updating to macOS Catalina? Final Fantasy 14 is now updated to 64-bit and supports Catalina!
These are the game’s official system requirements:

- Memory: 4GB
- Free Disc Space 60GB
- Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M295X or higher
- Recommended screen resolution: 1600×900
Make sure your machine meets these before making a purchase. Also, the game was recently updated to 64-bit, making it compatible with macOS Catalina, due this fall.

Can you run Final Fantasy 14 on Mac?
We recently tried the game on several Macs and were surprised by the game’s smooth performance.
We tested it on the following machines:
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2016): 2.0 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, Intel Iris Graphics 540 (1.5GB)
- iMac (5K, 27-inch, Late 2014): 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M290X (2GB)
- MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2013): 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB RAM, GeForce GT 650M (1GB)
